Actually, I tend to search the issue about seat occupancy because it is not easy to find a seat in the library especially during exam time. The primary solution is each seat equipped with a sensor will trigger a signal to our platform, when a seat is occupied. So it will indicate which seat is available. In addition, in case of short leave including going to a toilet or just buying a coffee, there will a timer which calculates the seat owner’s leaving time. If the time is too long, librarians can be notices and clear the stuffs on that table.
However, the results related to library is rather little, and most of articles is about how the space can affect students’ academic performance. Here below is about what I have found issues about libraries.
- ‘Academic Library Seating: A Survey of Usage, with Implications for Space Utilisation’ is about a research conducted in the University of Wollongong, where the seat usages was quantified and redundant seats would be removed while keep the comfortable study area.
- ‘Analysis of seat availability of library’ looks matches my topic, however, it lack of references, resulting in an unconving opinion, though five suggestions have been made. And the fourth advice that librarians should clear way the books used to occupying seats have been adopted in our school.
- ‘Olin Library Seat Status Tracker ‘ is the only relevant article, which provides practical solutions and codes .

- ‘Measuring Library Space Use and Preferences:Charting a Path Toward Increased Engagement’ aims at enabling students to engage in studying at a library after identifying students learn pattern. It is found that the largest proportion of students tend to study alone at a library in the open areas. , while private rooms is a place where group discussion can take place. In addition, interactive rooms and video rooms are good mediums to facilitate group interaction. Considering which factors matters most when choose a study floor, furniture accounts for 27.9%, followed by window views.
